PLC Retrofit Installation of Sewage Treatment Plant – Report Summary

The retrofit installation of the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system for the vessel’s sewage treatment plant was successfully carried out to enhance automation, operational reliability, and regulatory compliance. The project began with a thorough assessment of the existing control system, identifying outdated components, wiring, and control logic limitations. A modern PLC system was selected, compatible with the plant’s pumps, valves, sensors, and monitoring interfaces, ensuring full integration with existing hardware while providing improved diagnostics and process control. Electrical connections were upgraded using marine-grade wiring and components, with proper circuit protection and grounding implemented according to marine electrical standards. The installation included mounting the PLC control cabinet in a suitable, vibration-free, and accessible location, followed by secure routing of all I/O cabling to the sewage plant equipment. Comprehensive programming, logic configuration, and parameter setting were performed to enable automated operation, alarm handling, and remote monitoring. Post-installation verification included functional testing of all process sequences, safety interlocks, and emergency shutdown procedures under normal and simulated fault conditions. The retrofit has significantly improved system reliability, monitoring capability, and compliance with maritime environmental regulations.
